Cardiac MRI Strain Analysis: From Principles to Clinical Practice
We are pleased to announce the next session in our educational webinar series, Cardiac MRI Strain Analysis: From Principles to Clinical Practice, taking place on Wednesday 15th July at 6:30pm.
This practical and clinically focused webinar will explore the expanding role of CMR strain analysis in contemporary cardiovascular imaging, providing attendees with a clear understanding of both the underlying principles and real-world clinical applications.
Led by Professor Steffen Petersen and Dr Padraig O Driscoll, the session will offer expert insight into myocardial strain imaging and its growing importance across a range of cardiovascular conditions. The session aims to cover a range of key topics including:
- The fundamental principles of myocardial strain and myocardial mechanics
- The main CMR techniques used to measure strain, including tagging, DENSE, SENC, phase contrast, and feature tracking
- Key clinical applications of CMR strain in cardiomyopathies, heart failure, and ischaemic heart disease
- How strain analysis can support diagnosis, risk stratification, and patient management in clinical practice
As advanced tissue characterisation and functional imaging continue to evolve, strain imaging is becoming an increasingly valuable tool for understanding myocardial performance beyond conventional measures such as ejection fraction.

Professor Steffen Petersen
Consultant Cardiologist at Barts Heart Centre and Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at William Harvey Research Institute, Queen Mary University of London
Professor Steffen Petersen is a Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at Queen Mary University of London and a Consultant Cardiologist at Barts Heart Centre, with leadership roles in cardiovascular imaging and medical education. An internationally recognised expert in CMR, his research focuses on clinical trials, imaging-based prevention strategies, and large-scale population studies integrating cardiac imaging with electronic health record data.

Dr Padraig O Drisceoil
Cardiac Imaging Trainee Wessex Deanery / Cardiology Research Fellow Royal Brompton Hospital Cardio-Oncology Centre of Excellence
Dr Padraig O Drisceoil is a Wessex Deanery cardiology trainee with a subspecialty focus on multimodality cardiac imaging and heart failure is currently undertaking an out-of-program research fellowship at the Royal Brompton Cardio-Oncology Centre of Excellence. A graduate of University College Dublin and a Member of the Royal College of Physicians, he holds European Society of Cardiology certifications in transthoracic echocardiography and cardio-oncology and plans to return to clinical cardiology training in 2026.
We look forward to welcoming you to another engaging BSCMR educational webinar.
This event is free for BSCMR members. Attendees will be eligible to receive 1 CPD credit from the RCP following attendance and feedback completion.
