4D Flow CMR in Valvular Heart Disease – From Acquisition to Clinical Application
We are pleased to announce the next session in our educational webinar series, 4D Flow CMR in Valvular Heart Disease: From Acquisition to Clinical Application, taking place on Monday 19th of October 2026 at 5:00pm.
Valvular heart disease is one of the areas in which 4D flow CMR has moved most quickly from research technique towards clinical practice. This webinar covers what 4D flow measures, what is required to acquire a reliable dataset, and how the resulting measurements can be used in the assessment of patients with valve disease.
Led by Dr Alexander Gall, Kurian Thampi and Associate Professor Pankaj Garg, the session brings together the underlying principles, the practicalities of acquisition and the clinical application within a single hour. Topics will include:

The principles of time-resolved three-directional velocity encoding, and how 4D flow differs from conventional 2D phase contrast imaging

Sequence selection, VENC optimisation, acceleration and scan time, and the practical trade-offs involved in fitting 4D flow into a clinical protocol
- 3
Quality assurance and post-processing, including retrospective valve tracking
- 4
Assessment and quantification of aortic and mitral valve disease
Direct quantification of regurgitant volume, retrospective valve tracking and the ability to interrogate flow at any point within the acquired volume make 4D flow particularly well suited to valve disease, where conventional measures are often indirect and prone to inconsistency.

Dr Alexander Gall
Cardiology Specialty Registrar and Advanced Cardiac Imaging Research Fellow, 4D Lab, Norwich Medical School, University of East Anglia / Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.
Dr Alexander Gall is a Cardiology Specialty Registrar, currently out of programme for research, and an Advanced Cardiac Imaging Research Fellow in the 4D Lab, Norwich Medical School, University of East Anglia. He holds an honorary Cardiology Specialist Registrar post at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, where he continues clinical sessions in echocardiography and cardiovascular magnetic resonance.
His PhD, supervised by Associate Professor Pankaj Garg, examines valvular heart disease and right heart haemodynamics using 4D flow CMR. His published and ongoing work spans 4D flow assessment of intracardiac flow, the technical and post-processing factors that influence 4D flow derived haemodynamic measurements, and the application of the technique to valve disease. He passed the EACVI CMR written examination in 2025 and is working towards EACVI Level 3 CMR accreditation. He was awarded an oral presentation competition prize at ESC Congress, and serves as a Junior Reviewer on the editorial board of European Heart Journal – Case Reports within the imaging domain.

Dr Pankaj Garg
Clinical Scientist in Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK and an Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.
Dr Pankaj Gaarg graduated in Medicine with Honours from I.M. Sechenov (2003) and became a member of the Royal College of Physicians in 2007. After completing his BHF-funded PhD at Leeds (2017), he was awarded an NIHR Clinical Lectureship programme at the University of Sheffield. In 2020, he was awarded a Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Career Development Fellowship.
His research focus is cardiovascular haemodynamics and Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging. His ambition is to discover and advance a better understanding of the interface between cardiovascular flow and cardiac remodelling. He has received 25 national/international awards and has published > 230 peer-reviewed papers.

Kurian Thampi
MRI Radiographer at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.
Kurian has 13 years of radiography experience and extensive expertise in cardiac MRI. He leads the development of the cardiac MRI service at NNUH, driving protocol optimisation, service innovation, and the implementation of advanced cardiac imaging techniques, including 4D Flow MRI.
Kurian also manages the training and development of radiographers in cardiac MRI and works closely with cardiologists to deliver a wide range of specialised cardiac imaging examinations. His extensive practical experience and commitment to service development supports ongoing growth and advancement of cardiac MRI at NNUH.
